The Biological Cause
A defined lower face depends on two things working together: enough underlying structure to project the chin and edge the jaw, and a clean, taut line beneath it. Age and genetics erode both.

Bone and deep fat recede, so the chin and jaw lose projection, while loose skin and stubborn submental fat — a “double chin” — soften and blur the boundary between the face and neck.
